Apple’s M2 chip
As Apple prepares to release new devices powered by the M2 chip this week, here's everything you need to know about this highly anticipated processor.

Everything you need to know about Apple’s M2 chip

Last June, Apple unveiled its M2 chip, the latest generation of its custom silicon chip. This M2 chip is an improved version of the M1 chip, which was Apple’s first attempt to design its own ARM silicon. The M2 is Apple’s latest and most capable Silicon, with an 18% faster CPU, 35% faster GPU and 40% faster Neural Engine than previous generations, as well as 50% more memory bandwidth in more.

The M2 chip was originally designed for Mac computers and is currently found in the latest MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro. Apple could, however, launch 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros equipped with this famous chip, which would extend the use of the chip to devices other than Apple computers. Also expect Apple to continue expanding the M2 implementation to more of its devices in the future.

What the difference ?

Simply put, the M2 chip is a more advanced version of the M1 chip. It is important to note that the difference between the M1 and M2 chips is not as great as the difference between the Intel chip and the M1 chip, but it is still considerable.

Compared to the M1 chip, Apple’s M2 chip offers 18% higher multi-core CPU performance, up to two more GPU cores, 50% increase in memory bandwidth, 25 % higher at the same power level as the M1 and up to 35% higher at its maximum.

It also enables a 25% increase in transistor count, 2.3x faster performance at the same power level, a 50% increase in unified memory bandwidth, and a 40% increase in memory operations. neural motor. “M2 marks the beginning of the second generation of M-series chips and goes beyond the remarkable characteristics of M1”, boasts Johny Srouji, senior vice president of hardware technologies at Apple.

“Thanks to our constant focus on improving power efficiency, the M2 chip offers a faster CPU, GPU and Neural Engine. And with higher memory bandwidth and new capabilities like ProRes acceleration, M2 continues the incredible pace of innovation in Apple silicon for the Mac.”

Why an M2 chip?

In November 2020, Apple unveiled its first ARM-based silicon, the M1 chip. With this new chip, Apple took its independence vis-à-vis Intel, which until then equipped the computers of the Apple brand. Apple’s Silicon-based Macs perform much better overall than those with Intel chips, including faster performance, better battery life, and thermal efficiency. Designing its own chips was a win for Apple, which no longer had to depend on Intel for its chips, and for customers who got a more capable Mac.

Along with the M2 and M1, Apple also offers the M1 Pro and M1 Max. The M2, unveiled in 2022, was built to accommodate the latest technologies, such as next-generation processors, GPUs, Secure Enclave and Apple’s Neural Engine.

If you want one of the best Apple devices out there, you should buy one with an M2 processor. However, this increase in performance goes hand in hand with an increase in the price of the hardware. It is therefore recommended to identify which performance specifications of the device are important to you and which are not. If you don’t necessarily need the speed, more memory, or one of the more advanced features of the M2 chip, it might be a good idea for you to save some money and buy a device with the M1 chip.
